5 Mistakes Nigerians Make When Trying To Make Money Online

Anthony Felicia ·17 Sept 20264 min read

Every Nigerian wants to make money online. But 90% fail in the first 30 days. Why?

It’s not because they are lazy. It’s not because they don’t have data. It’s because they keep making the same 5 mistakes.

I made all 5 mistakes too when I started. I lost ₦30,000 to a Ponzi scheme, I tried 4 businesses in one month, and I quit my first skill after 2 weeks.

If you want to avoid my mistakes and start making money faster, read this carefully.

### MISTAKE 1: LOOKING FOR "FAST MONEY" INSTEAD OF A SKILL This is the biggest mistake. You type "how to make ₦50k in 24 hours" on Google. You see "Invest ₦10k and get ₦100k". You pay. You lose your money.

There is no fast money online. Anyone who promises you fast money is scamming you.

What works is SKILL MONEY. Learn one skill that people will pay you for. Writing, graphic design, video editing, voice over, tutoring.

I have a friend who learned Canva design for 1 week. He now charges ₦5,000 per flyer. He makes ₦40k per month from just 8 flyers. No scam. Just skill.

Stop looking for fast money. Start looking for a valuable skill.

### MISTAKE 2: DOING 5 THINGS AT THE SAME TIME On Monday you are doing dropshipping. On Tuesday you are doing crypto trading. On Wednesday you are doing affiliate marketing. On Thursday you want to start a YouTube channel.

You will fail all of them.

Success online comes from FOCUS. Pick ONE thing and do it for 90 days.

When I started, I was doing WhatsApp marketing, typing assignments, and selling thrift clothes at the same time. I made ₦0. When I focused on only ONE – WhatsApp marketing – I made my first ₦15,000 in 1 week.

Pick one side hustle. Stick to it for 3 months. Then add another one.

### MISTAKE 3: NOT POSTING PROOF AND RESULTS You are doing good work, but nobody knows. You design a flyer for someone, you don’t post it. You help someone type their assignment, you don’t tell anyone. You teach someone Maths, you don’t record it.

If you don’t post proof, nobody will trust you to pay you.

How to fix it: After every small job, post it on your WhatsApp status. "I just designed this flyer for a client – DM me if you need one" "I just helped 2 JSS3 students pass Maths – My class is open" "I just typed a 10-page project – I’m available"

Proof brings trust. Trust brings money.

### MISTAKE 4: TRYING TO SELL TO EVERYBODY You want to sell to rich people, poor people, students, mothers, everybody. You will sell to nobody.

Pick ONE type of person. For example: - Only sell to makeup vendors - Only teach JAMB students - Only type assignments for final year students - Only design flyers for churches

When you focus on one type of person, you understand their problem better, and they will pay you more.

For example, if you only design flyers for churches, you can charge ₦5,000 per flyer because you know what churches want. If you design for everybody, you will charge ₦500.

Riches are in niches.

### MISTAKE 5: GIVING UP AFTER 2 WEEKS This is where most Nigerians fail. They try for 1 week, nobody pays them, they quit. They say "online money is scam".

But nothing works in 1 week. Even a farmer waits 3 months after planting.

Give yourself 90 days. For 90 days, post every day, tell people what you do, improve your skill, collect proof.

I know a lady in my department who started tutoring on TikTok. For 30 days, only 3 people watched her live. On day 45, one video blew up. She got 20 students paying ₦2,000 each. That’s ₦40,000 in one week.

If she quit on day 30, she would have made ₦0.

### WHAT TO DO INSTEAD Here is the simple formula that works in 2026:

1. Pick ONE skill you can learn in 1 week (Canva, typing, tutoring, WhatsApp marketing) 2. Pick ONE type of person to sell to 3. Post proof every single day for 90 days 4. Don’t chase fast money

If you do this, you will make your first ₦10,000 – ₦50,000 online in the next 30-60 days. Not from scam. From skill.

Stop making these 5 mistakes. Start doing what works.
