I Stopped Begging People To Stay

Anthony Felicia ·28 Sept 20264 min read

I used to be the one who begged people to stay. Friends, talking stage, even family members. If I felt someone pulling away from me, I would run after them. I would double text, apologize even when I was not wrong, and do everything to keep them in my life. I thought love meant holding on tight no matter what.

But all that holding on was actually breaking me.

I remember one friendship in particular. We were so close in year one. We did everything together, we gist, we laugh, we plan our future. Then slowly she started changing. Her replies became dry, she started hanging out with new people, she would cancel our plans. I noticed it but I pretended not to. Instead of giving her space, I tried harder. I was buying her things, checking on her every day, always available. I was trying to earn back a friendship that she had already walked away from in her mind.

That was the pattern with everyone. If a guy was acting distant, I would become sweeter. If my friends were ignoring me, I would become more helpful. I thought if I was just good enough, kind enough, available enough, they would see my value and stay. I did not know I was teaching people how to take me for granted.

I was so scared of losing people that I was losing myself. I was anxious every day. I was checking my phone every minute, wondering who was angry with me, who I needed to please today. I could not even sleep well because I was overthinking a simple message. My self-esteem was tied to how people treated me. If they were nice to me, I felt good. If they were cold, I felt worthless.

One day I just got tired. I was tired of crying over people who could sleep fine without me. I was tired of explaining my worth to people who were determined not to see it. I was tired of carrying dead friendships and dead talking stages on my head like a burden.

So I stopped. I stopped begging. I stopped chasing. I stopped double texting. I stopped apologizing for things I did not do. I decided to let people go where they want to go.

And something strange happened. When I stopped begging, I found peace.

I realized that the people who really want to be in your life will not need to be begged. They will stay because they want to, not because you forced them. Real love, real friendship, it feels calm, not anxious. It feels safe, not confusing. You do not have to beg for something that is real.

Letting people go is painful at first, I will not lie. You will feel lonely. You will want to call them, to check if they miss you. You will feel like you are a bad person for letting go. But after that pain comes freedom. You will realize how much energy you were wasting on people who were not wasting one second thinking about you.

Now I live differently. If you want to go, you can go. I will not stop you. I will not hate you, I will not insult you, I will just open the door for you with love. Because I understand that people come into our lives for a season. Some come for a lifetime, some come to teach us a lesson. Not everyone you meet is meant to stay till the end, and that is okay.

I also stopped taking it personally. Sometimes people leave not because you are a bad person, but because their journey is different from yours. Sometimes people are dealing with their own problems and they cannot carry you along. Sometimes they just outgrow you. It is not always your fault. You can be a good person and still people will leave you. That is life.

Since I stopped begging, I have found better things. I have found peace of mind. I have found self-respect. I have found time to focus on myself, my school, my glow, my future. I have found that I enjoy my own company now. I do not need plenty friends to feel worthy. I just need a few real ones, and most importantly, I need myself.

If you are reading this and you are in that stage where you are begging someone to stay, please stop. Respect yourself enough to let them go. Stop watering a dead flower. Stop begging for love that should be freely given. You are not hard to love. You are just loving the wrong people.

One day you will look back and be grateful that some people left, because their leaving created space for better people and better opportunities to come in. Trust me.

So today, I am choosing peace over people-pleasing. I am choosing self-respect over attachment. I am choosing myself.

And you should too.
