My Hostel Roommate in FUNAI Stole My Boyfriend and My Pot of Soup
My 200L second semester in AE-FUNAI taught me a bitter lesson I will never forget in my life.
I had a roommate, Mirabel. We were very close, like blood sisters. In our hostel at Ndieze, we do everything together. We cook together, we read together in the night, we even wear each other's clothes and slippers. If you see us, you will think we are twins. Everybody in our block knew us as "the two besties".
Then in 200L, I started dating a 300L guy, Ebuka. He is a fine boy, tall, light skinned, also in Geology department. He is popular because he plays football for department. Mirabel was even the one that encouraged me to date him. She would always tell me, "Felicia, this guy likes you oh, give him chance. He has been asking about you."
So we started dating. It was sweet at first. Anytime Ebuka comes to our hostel to visit me, Mirabel will be very nice to him. She will offer him food, bring water for him to drink, even wash plate for him after he eats. I thought she was just being supportive and caring for my relationship. I was even happy that my roommate likes my boyfriend.
I did not know she had other plans.
One Sunday, I cooked a big pot of afang soup. You know that student afang soup that we manage with plenty garri to last for one week. I used my last money to buy that soup. I put fish, kpomo, everything inside. I was so proud of that soup. I kept it in our general fridge in the hostel, and I wrote my name on it. I planned to be eating it small small until Friday.
On Tuesday, I came back from GEY 202 lecture. That lecture is very stressful, from 8am to 12pm, standing under sun to identify rocks. I was tired and very hungry. I just wanted to go and warm my soup and eat with garri.
I opened the fridge, my pot was empty. Empty and washed clean, as if I never cooked anything. I thought I was dreaming. I checked again. Nothing.
I ran to our room and shouted, "Mirabel, where is my soup? Who carried my soup?"
She was lying on the bed pressing phone. She looked up and said calmly, "Ah, sorry, Ebuka came around yesterday when you went to class. He said he was hungry and I gave him the soup to take to his lodge."
I was shocked. The soup I planned for one week, she gave to a boy just like that? She did not even ask me. I was angry but I let it go because I did not want to fight over soup. I just told her, "Next time, ask me first."
But that was the beginning.
The next week, I noticed Ebuka stopped calling me. He would not reply my WhatsApp messages. When I call him, he would say "I'm busy with my final year project, I'll call you later." But he never called. I was confused. What did I do?
Then one night, around 8pm, I was going to buy pure water at the junction near Ndidom hostel. As I was walking, I saw two people holding hands in front of me. The guy was wearing Ebuka's signature Geology field cap, the one I bought for him. The girl was wearing my own top, the white polo I lent to Mirabel.
I moved closer. It was Ebuka and Mirabel, holding hands and laughing. They were so lost in each other, they did not even see me. My heart broke into pieces.
My own roommate. My own boyfriend. My own soup. Everything gone.
I did not shout there. I just went back to hostel and waited for her. When she came back around 10pm, smelling like his perfume, I confronted her that night.
I said, "Mirabel, I saw you today with Ebuka. What is going on?"
She did not even deny it. She just sat down and said, "Felicia, you are too serious, you always talk about CGPA and exams and GEY 202. You are always reading. He wants someone free, someone that will make him laugh. You are too boring."
I cried that night. No be small tears. I cried until I slept.
The next day, I packed my things and moved to another room in the hostel. I could not stay with her again.
Lesson I learnt: In school, don't bring your boyfriend to your hostel too much. Don't tell your roommate too much about your relationship. And never keep a full pot of soup in a general fridge if you have a roommate like Mirabel.
Some roommates are friends, some are monitoring spirits.
Have you experienced this kind of roommate before in AE-FUNAI or any school? Tell me in comments, I want to hear your own story.
