The conductor called it twice before Ada realised the bus was hers. She climbed in with her bag against her chest, and the city began to slide past the window like a film someone else was watching.

By the third stop the rain had started, and the man beside her began to talk — not to her exactly, but into the dark, the way people do when they have carried something too long.
